Internet marketing is a fairly broad term that can be broken down into two different areas:

  1. Sponsored or Pay-per-click (PPC) Advertising
  2. Organic (or Natural) Search Engine Ranking
Both areas can be utilized to drive more traffic to a website, but they each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Sponsored or Pay-per-click (PPC) Advertising

Sponsored advertising essentially means that you must pay a website for your placement there. This is typically referring to advertising on search results pages on Google or Yahoo, or on other websites where your target demographic may be, such as Facebook or another website in your industry that gets a lot of traffic. Some key advantages include fairly easy setup, great statistics, and very fast results. The disadvantage is you pay for it, and your placement is on the right side of the screen, typically, where people may not focus as much attention on.

Organic (or Natural) Search Engine Ranking

Organic ranking refers to how well your website naturally ranks when someone searches on a search engine using terms that relate to your services or products. This is typically determined by how well your website is search engine optimized (SEO) and how many incoming links you have pointing to your site (Link Building).
